The robot's name came from computer networking's term "tombstoning" meaning to kill it and have it stay dead. Tombstone is confirmed to be participating in Season 6 to once again attempt to win a second Giant Nut and reclaim the title as the current reigning champion. Tombstone redeemed itself for its Season 5 failure by being the first Legend to defend their Bounty by defeating its respective Bounty Hunter bracket winner of Gruff to earn a portion of the $25,000 prize.
In Season 5, Tombstone shockingly went 1-2 in the qualifying rounds due to some tougher matchups, but still made it into the Top 32 Championship Tournament, but fell in the Round of 16 to Black Dragon after its weapon receiver became unplugged. In Season 4, Rotator surprisingly knocked Tombstone out, but Tombstone was able to redeem itself for its early exit from Season 3, but fell in the semis to Bite Force in a rematch from the Season 1 Finals. Tombstone was one of the few bots in Season 3 to finish the Fight Card rounds with a 4-0 record but fell in the Round of 16 to Bombshell because it got stuck on its own weapon chain and because of a lack of spare frames, costing him the title as the reigning champion. Tombstone did incredibly well in Season 2, defeating every opponent in his path to make it to the Finals again where it KOed Bombshell to become the reigning champion. In Season 1, Tombstone knocked out every opponent in his path to make it to the Finals where it lost to Bite Force after losing its weapon due to overheated batteries. With one of the most destructive weapons in the field, former champion Tombstone remains one of the most successful robots in the BattleBots reboot, winning many of its fights by KO. Tombstone is a heavyweight (formally a superheavyweight) robot built by Hardcore Robotics which competed in the 2004 NPC Charity Open, 2009 BattleBots Professional Championship and every season of the BattleBots reboot on ABC and Discovery.
